Youth of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church Hold 30-Hour Fast
On April 27-28, seven youth and Pastor Teri Peterson of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church fasted for 30 hours, drinking only water and limited amounts of juice as they learned about hunger around the world and in their community, had a Bible Study about hunger and fasting, and learned how they could make a difference. They ended the 30 hour famine with worship that included tolling a bell and blowing out a candle every three seconds for two minutes, to remember the fact that a child dies of hunger or preventable hunger-related disease every 3 seconds. They broke the fast with communion during worship, and had a simple meal of baked potatoes.
Every person participating reached their fundraising goal, which was $360 (enough to feed a child for one year), and they raised $3,082, enough to feed 8 children for a whole year and one child for half the year. All the money goes to WorldVision, a Christian non-profit engaged in attacking poverty around the world.
In the photo here, the youth are at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, dropping off 70 pounds of food that they collected from members of the congregation during a 1.5 hour Scavenger Hunt. For more information visit www.30hourfamine.org.
