Bread for the World Offering of Letters

Offering of Letters

What a wonderful response from the congregation to the Offering of Letters on April 6! Ninety-four letters were completed on Sunday morning, and several more people took materials home. Perhaps with their participation, we reached the 100-mark. But of far more significance is the commitment each one showed to place the concerns of hungry and vulnerable people before our elected leaders. For more information on Bread for the World visit www.bread.org Thank you for your efforts on behalf of God's people in need.   ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Fairhaven Student Sponsorship

Last month the Mission Outreach Ministry asked the congregation to respond to the needs of the students at Fairhaven School in Alexandria, Egypt. The response has been outstanding. We have received enough contributions and pledges of support to not only sponsor Sara and Randa for the school year, but last week we informed the director of the school that our congregation would sponsor at least one more student. That student is Safaa, an autistic girl whose family is getting by on help from the church and her father's humble pension from work. Your generosity in providing financial support in this way to our sister church in Egypt is greatly appreciated. If you would still like to be a part of this child sponsorship program with Fairhaven School, please contact Rick Johnson. Watch for information about our students on a bulletin board in the Connecting Link very soon. Again, thank you for your love and concern for God's young people in need. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry
Home of the Sparrow Easter Baskets

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

Thanks to everyone who donated items for the Home of the Sparrow Easter baskets or helped our Sunday school children put the baskets together!!! This year we put together baskets for 36 kids and 16 adults. Over 50 baskets all together! And without all of you this would not have been possible. Thank you!!

WE DID IT!!!!

Thanks to the able assistance of 28 RCLPC people, we will complete our first year in the PADS Lunch Program. A fantastic job done by families, individuals and kids!

The following people participated one or more times to make this Mission project a total success: Sheila and Jeff Mohler, Rebecca Floyd, Bob and Luci Treese, Susan and Elizabeth Zacher, Cheryl, Tom, Marin, and Ryan Lilly, Marge Stewart, Melanie, Phil, Carl, Dale and Elliott Wesa, Ann Legg, Lois and Rick Johnson, MJ Towne, Gloria Thorson, Alice Haznedl, Cheryl and Dick Brincks, Lori Thompson and her team of women who made a special fellowship day of the opportunity and had lunch together as well as packing lunches, the Primetimers, Karen and Amanda Nelson, Karen Hutchings and Ann Poremba.

Please accept my apology if I missed listing your name because there were times when I saw other people stopping by the RCLPC kitchen, grabbing a pair of plastic gloves and helping the current team assemble lunches. Lunches were prepared the second and fifth Sunday of each month from October through April.

I have let PADS know that if there is another Sunday when help is needed, to count on RCLPC. So watch for the sign up sheet for October! ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Food Pantry News - a chance to help someone in need

The last time we ran the food pantry we served 35 families. It seemed as though more people were out of work. Supplies are low in some key items such as crackers, kids’ juice, snacks, canned corn, coffee, tea, cereal and cocoa. If you can help, please put the food items in the bin for the pantry (located under the stairwell by the Connecting Link).

Things will improve greatly after the Post Office Food Drive on Saturday, May 10th. Tons of food comes in, however, we need help. Most of the pantry board members are old and sorting tons of food in a few hours (2 - 5:30pm) is difficult. If you would bring your children (they are great at this) and stop by the Algonquin Township garage on Rt 14 just east of Crystal Lake for an hour or two that Saturday afternoon, it would be a tremendous help. For more information, call Nancy Vazzano. Thank you.

PEACEmaking Banner Opportunity

The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program staff is inviting us to create a banner celebrating our congregation’s peace and justice ministries and to send the banner to the 218th General Assembly in San Jose, California in June 2008 where the Peacemaking Program will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Commitment to Peacemaking. Please take a few minutes and look at the sketch on the Bulletin Board in the Connecting Link to see if you have some suggestions about the proposed Banner draft. Laura Gilmore has kindly started on this project to give RCLPC some direction:

Lakota Bible Project
By Abena Songbird, Dakota/Lakota Journal

An ambitious project is about to premier culminating tireless work of a team of Lakota traditional speakers, ceremonial people, theologians and educators – the Lakota Bible Translation Project. The Team will show a video completed in 2006, “The Gospel of Luke” translated into the Lakota language. In recognition of Easter, they highlighted the Crucifixion and Resurrection/Ascension portions of the film and showed it at a theater in Rapid City, SD.

A selection from Oyate Ki Tanyan Nipi Kta Ca Wati Welo shows how similar the Parables of the Scripture are to Lakota thought and teachings ( Hebrews 10:19-25) reads: Long ago there was a wise leader who called several young men to a meeting. He told them that nature’s signs indicated that a very harsh winter was coming upon them soon and that their food provisions would not last them. They would starve before spring came. He sent each of them off separately to think of their dilemma. After some time, he called them back together and each one spoke of possible solutions. But all of the suggestions had some flaws. He left them to debate together. They finally came up with one solution that was sound and would assure their winter survival. When individuals think alone, then the thoughts are weak. When people think together, the thoughts are powerful. So it is with prayer. When people consider each other’s needs and the good of the whole, prayers are not selfish, but profound. ~ The Native American Connection.
