Help Needed for
PADS Lunches

Help is needed to prepare lunches for Wednesday, December 23rd. January, 2010 is also open and assistance is needed. We will be making between 35 and 50 lunches and your help will be much appreciated. Please sign up in the Connecting Link. It only requires a little of your time and the lunches provide a meal for someone living with homelessness.

Teacher Assistants Needed

If you can assist the teacher in the Kindergarten & 1st grade classroom on Sunday mornings, please contact Karen Nelson or Patti Hill. No lesson planning is required, only your assistance please. Thank you.

Food Pantry Update

Monday (Dec. 7) was our service day and we were swamped from the very beginning. Sometimes it was standing room only in the lobby. We took care of close to 80 families which might be a new record. Our wonderful volunteers (you know who you are) were amazing; they kept on helping without breaks, some without lunch, trying to care for the needy. We saw seniors with breathing issues, single parents (male and female) working poor and some out of work. We ran out of bread and bought some. Thanks to community harvest we had lots of food to give out. What a great, great job everyone did. Bless you all for your help and support. Nancy Vazzano

Read with the Pastor Book Group!

Ever wonder where your pastor learns things or what she does with her time?
Well, now you can find out! Teri will tell us a book she is reading, and we can all read along with her, and then join together to talk about it on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm.

The next gathering will be Tuesday, December 15 here in the Fellowship Hall, with holiday treats provided! The book will be Becoming the Answer to our Prayers by Shane Claiborne and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove. The book is available from amazon.com, the Huntley library, and the Crystal Lake Barnes and Noble.

Help Needed

We are in need of $20/$25 Jewel gift cards which can be used for gas and/or food. People are hurting and our need to assist people who come in during the week is growing. If you feel you could purchase a gift card or two, please place them in an envelope with your name marked on it in the offering plate. These cards will be turned into the church office where we can allocate them as needed and you will receive a letter confirming your donation. Thank you for your generosity.

Choir Cantata
December 20
9:30 & 11:00am

A Ceremony of Carols

The RCLPC adult choir will be joined by Molly McKenzie, harpist, as we present A Ceremony of Carols by English composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) in worship at 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 20.

Britten’s inspiration to compose across centuries of sacred music – combining ancient carols with 20th century arrangements – came amid a crossing of another sort, of the North Atlantic Ocean, aboard a Swedish cargo ship during World War II.

In 1942, Britten returned to England after a three-year stay in the United States. Along the way, his ship docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he obtained a copy of The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems. During an ensuing creative burst at sea, he composed A Ceremony of Carols for three treble voices and harp.

Britten’s carols owe their unique flavor to his extensive use of old English, drawing heavily on works from the 15th and 16th centuries, and his atmospheric musical settings – from frigid winter to warm enchantment. Because of their immense popularity, the carols were later arranged for four-part chorus by Julius Harrison, a friend and associate of the composer.

I hope you will mark your calendars and invite your friends to worship on December 20 for this musical and moving Advent experience.

Worship fully. Spend less. Give more. Love all.

Alternative Christmas Giving Opportunities:

Our Annual Christmas Giving Tree is up and full of tags from many nonprofit outreach agencies in McHenry County including Youth Service Bureau, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, C L Food Pantry, Faith in Action of McHenry County, Illinois Migrant Council, Home of the Sparrow, Military Lift families; agency needs and families who will not have Christmas without the love we show them through our sharing. Please take one or more tags and return the gift to the Giving Tree by the date specified on the tag. Leave the tag with the gift so the gift can be distributed properly.

"The Ark" Food Distribution on December 23, 2009. Please look for The Ark in Fellowship Hall; lift the roof to add your gift to enable RCLPC to buy a truckload of food for distribution. The volunteer sign-up sheet is on the Mission Board in the Connecting Link so help us buy the food and come out and help distributing to the hundreds of families in our community who are hungry.

‘Tis the Season for Good Cheer

Unfortunately, many families don’t feel that way but YOU can help to spread the joy and hope of Christmas by participating in The Advent Conspiracy this year. On Wednesday, December 23rd, RCLPC will be hosting a food truck, and along with the food distribution we want to spread a little cheer with gifts for the children ages Infant through 17 years of age. If you have any lightly worn toys /books or a reasonably priced new toy/book that you think would put a smile on someone’s face, wrap it up and bring it to the church before the 23rd of December so we can pass on the spirit of the season to someone in need of some Christmas cheer. Please be sure to label your gift with the age and gender so it gets to just the right person! Older kids may appreciate books or a cool piece of clothing! Any questions or if you would like to participate in other ways please call Melanie Wesa about gifts and Joy Martin or Teri for everything else. OR you can always call the church @ 815-459-1132. Thanks so much! Worship Fully.

Christmas Eve Worship Services –
3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:00 & 10:30

The 3:30 service is designed especially for families with young children. We will sing Christmas carols and share communion.

The 5:30 service will be “Christmas Unplugged,” combining elements from our alternative and more traditional services. We will sing Christmas carols (with acoustic guitar accompaniment). We will also share communion and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight.

At the 7:30 and 9:00 services we will sing Christmas carols and the adult choir will provide special music. We will also share communion and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight.

The 10:30 service will be a quieter, more intimate experience, with soloists and/or small ensembles providing special music. We will still sing Christmas carols, including “Silent Night” by candlelight, and share communion.

We look forward to sharing Christmas Eve together. We hope you will plan to attend one (or more) of our services and will invite others to join us. Thank you.

20th Anniversary of Fairhaven School in Alexandria, Egypt

Pastor Gendi Rizk has extended an invitation to RCLPC to come to Egypt for a March 30 and over Easter 2010 celebration of the 20th anniversary of Fairhaven School for the handicapped. We have made three trips to Alexandria and Cairo, the last one being 2006 and RCLPC has hosted teachers from Fairhaven School as they honed their skills at NISRA and Pioneer Center on two trips they made to McHenry County. This will be a trip you will long remember so whether you have gone previously or are a first-timer, do consider joining Maggie and Doug Crane who will be returning for their second trip. Several people in our congregation who have made previous trips there will be delighted to answer your questions including Joan and Jack Black, Dennis, Tina and Giana Stipati, Ann Legg, Joy Martin, Kim and Kayla Stewart, Laura Kay, the Mohlers, and many others. At present, we are supporting three girls at Fairhaven so that they can reach their full potential under the guidance of the loving and knowledgeable teachers there. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Life Line Screening at Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

We will be hosting a community preventive health screening on Thursday, January 21, 2009. Life Line Screening will be offering ultrasound screenings for the prevention of stroke and vascular disease.

Life Line Screening includes an ultrasound of the carotid arteries in the neck to determine if you are at risk for stroke. The majority of strokes are linked to blockage caused by the buildup of plaque in the carotid arteries. A new screening is now available to detect atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that is linked to up to 20% of strokes. A screening of the arteries of the legs is offered to check for peripheral arterial disease, which is the leading cause of diabetic amputations and an indicator of heart disease. Lastly, a test is performed to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms. All results are reviewed by a board certified vascular surgeon and sent directly to you with all the information you need to take to your own personal physician for any needed follow up.

These screenings are non-invasive, painless and affordable; the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package (4 tests) is only $139. Also, a finger stick blood package including cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL/LDL, and glucose is available for an additional $50 with that package. Osteoporosis-$10 additional with ultrasound package.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Appointment times begin at 9:00am and fill quickly; please call Life Line Screening directly at 1-800-324-1851 for your appointment or for more information.
