The Spirit

of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

Congregational Meeting Called

Session has called a Congregational meeting for Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 immediately following the 9:30 service. The purpose of the meeting shall be for reviewing the annual report and budget, approving terms of call for pastoral staff, approving the new mission statement, and election of a pastor nominating committee (PNC).

Proposed Mission Statement

We gather in grace, connected by a sense of place and purpose with generations of faithful servant-leaders who journeyed before us. We seek to open our hearts as we open our doors – with room for everyone – and to open all our senses to God’s life-affirming, life-changing presence through creative and diverse worship.

We grow in grace, not because we know all the answers – or even all the questions – but because we are drawn to God’s word and Christ’s example. We seek to be Christ’s family here and now – to embrace each other as we are, to nurture who we might become, to celebrate with one another in good times and encourage one another in hard times, to listen and learn and lead.

We go in grace, challenged and strengthened by the Spirit to do God’s work and show God’s love in the world. We seek to look beyond our walls and beyond ourselves – to see God’s image in every face, and to serve God’s people in every place life leads us.

The journey continues in an ever-widening circle of grace.

A Word From Your Interim Pastor

What is a thriving faith community? A thriving faith community is grace-filled, joyful, hopeful, and resilient in the face of adversity. Adversity…. the war effort on terrorism, the shame of and sadness about our government and business leaders, economic woes like we haven’t seen for years – call it what you will, we are in tough times. You’re probably saying I hear too much of that in the media everyday, I don’t need to read it in my church newsletter.

But this is the context in which we find ourselves called to be God’s mission in our world. There is no doubt people are hurting; the paradox is that this may be a time when they are more open to God and needful of a faith community. Before us are both the challenges and the opportunities for ministry.

When the 30 members of our leadership teams met on a retreat day last Saturday (snowy, cold…), we began with an opening devotion led by Teri in order to frame our discussions and decisions as ‘worshipful work’, an offering to God.

The first item was plain talk about the financial situation of the church as we begin 2009. I encourage each and every one of you to attend the congregational meeting which will begin at 10:15 on January 25th. With mixed emotions but firm resolve, the Session has approved a budget that cuts as deeply as we can without eliminating staff, programs, or mission. We will present the budget to you, the rationale for decisions, and a proposed solution to making it through tough times. Please know that the session has also committed to close oversight of income and expenses in order to make adjustments if needed and will be keeping you informed.

Next we spent a block of time evaluating our church’s health in terms of the quality characteristics of growing churches. Thinking about the issues facing us in terms of maintaining the quality of the congregation’s life in preparation for the calling of a new pastor, we set priorities for the year. Many of these focus on building relationships, keeping personal contact with all of you, integrating newcomers and supporting our younger families, those experiencing stress, and our older members who may be isolated. Fellowship and fun will warm our spirits. Developing new leaders is also a priority. Communication will be key; concrete plans are to be developed. Each one of you and all of us together will be asked to play a role.

All of this gives me good reason to hope that RCLPC will continue to be a church filled with enthusiasm, laughter, and hope. A proposed mission statement is in the Spirit. Does it capture the essence of your visioning process. Gather in grace, grow in grace, go in grace….do those words sing for you? Can you nod your head and say “Yes, this is who we are.”

Adversity and tough times may be the wind that sets our sails in motion. There is no reason that we can’t keep growing in the power of the Holy Spirit. With God’s help, we can do this!

~ Pastor Jan

Attention RCLPC Members!

We are in need of two volunteers (male & female) to chaperone the Middle School Youth to their retreat in January. This is always an exciting event for the youth, filled with learning opportunities and fellowship. Please consider helping the youth experience this wonderful opportunity. If you are available and interested please contact Teri Peterson or Cheryl Lilly for details, etc. Dates/Times: Depart RCLPC by 5 PM on Friday, Jan. 23; Return to RCLPC late morning/early afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 25th. Thank You in advance for considering this opportunity. Sincerely, Tom and Cheryl Lilly, Teri Peterson

Pancake Party, Sunday January 18th

Join us in Fellowship Hall from 9-11:15am for a pancake party! The High School Youth (and their parents) will be making pancakes and sausage, served up with fruit, juice and coffee, for your dining pleasure! This is a great opportunity to gather before or after worship, to have some great food and great fellowship, and to support our youth ministry here at RCLPC. Cost will be $5/adult, $3/child. All profits will go toward the High School Youth summer trip to the Montreat Youth Conference, where they will learn more about mission—what the needs are, what they can do themselves, and how they can use their faith and their voices to empower others to help change the world. See you on the 18th!

RCLPC Chili Cookoff – Sunday, January 25 at 4:30pm

Howdy Partners! It's time to round-up your best chili recipe and get along over to RCLPC to have some FUN. There will be a prize for the best vegetarian and non-vegetarian chili as voted on by you. Please bring the chili in a crock pot. If you would prefer to bring a side dish, that would be fabulous as well. We will play BINGO and Bible Charades. There is a sign-up in the Connecting Link. We look forward to seeing you there! Yeehah! Thanks! Contact Rebecca Floyd (815)788-7650 if there are any questions.

Bread Basket Ministry

The Bread Basket Ministry needs your help this winter!  As you may know, when visitors worship with us and provide a local delivery address, we acknowledge their visit with a note and a tasty baked treat during the week following worship!  Many of our new members have had this first sweet "taste" of RCLPC hospitality. There is a new winter sign-up sheet for January - April 2009 in The Connecting Link … please consider signing up for one or two weeks to continue this welcoming tradition!  And please include your email address!  We track who has received a delivery, so please plan to call or email back to Amy when the delivery has been made.  Any questions, call Amy Collins.

Advent Conspiracy Report

We did a great job on our Advent Conspiracy, conspiring with God to do something great this Advent season. We learned together about the history of Christmas, we spent time talking about and reading the Christmas story, we brainstormed ways to keep the focus of Christmas on the gift of Christ, and we contributed to the alleviation of poverty worldwide! As a congregation, we have given the gift of skills, livestock, and self-sufficiency to several families and ultimately whole communities. We didn’t quite fill the ark, but we did bring in $1,870 for the Heifer Project! Since we don’t want to just hang onto the money while people are suffering in poverty, we decided to go ahead and send that in to Heifer, purchasing a (very Christmas appropriate!) “Joy To The World Collection” (2 sheep, 4 goats, 1 heifer, and 2 llamas) along with extra gifts of a water buffalo and a pig. These gifts of livestock and training will make a world of difference in the lives of many families, so thank you all for contributing to Heifer as part of our Advent Conspiracy! God certainly did use us to do something great this Advent and Christmas season.

New WEAVE class has begun: A New Church for a New World

“The church is a people on the move, on a journey, a pilgrimage. The church is a work in progress.” These are the first sentences of the book we are studying together this winter at The Crossing—the adult education hour from 7-8 on Wednesday evenings in the fellowship hall. We are using this book, A New Church for a New World, to explore what it means to be the church in our current context—as compared to the church of the history books. Watch for more information! Books can be purchased for $12 from the church office.

WEAVE Needs Your Help!

We love WEAVE! We love the time to share table fellowship, to eat good food, to converse with friends, to sing and learn and play. But we need some help: each week the cleanup after dinner has been falling on just one or two people while the rest of us go on to different things. But many hands make light work! If you can help clean up after dinner, please do! We start cleaning up around 6:50, and the work begins in earnest at 7. If lots of us are helping, it will only take a few minutes. Please pitch in! Thanks!

Souper Bowl Sunday is coming up fast!

As we all wait to see who will be playing in Super Bowl XLIII, we look forward with anticipation as thousands of young people across the country join together to demonstrate God's love and compassion to those in need in our communities. With our nation’s economy in crisis, this year's Souper Bowl of Caring on February 1 presents us all with the timely opportunity to step out in faith. We can all do our part to provide help to charities who are struggling to support our neighbors who are hungry and hurting. Last year RCLPC broke all our previous records, with donations totaling $1460.60 as well as 354 food pantry items! This year our goal is to further widen the circle of grace, giving to those most in need during these hard times. Help us reach the $1500 mark! And bring those canned food items too! Look for the Soup pots on Feb. 1!

Another Successful Year for Cookie Walk

Approximately $2700 was raised that will go to help Fairhaven School in Alexandria, Egypt, our church general fund, PADS, CL Food Pantry, Home of the Sparrow, Turning Point, Faith In Action, Northern IL Hospice, Girls on the Run and our church youth. We want to thank everyone who participated, especially those wonderful bakers. A big thank you to our committee chairs Mary Moltmann, Sarah Metivier, Laurie Dayon, Denise Sokoloski, Ed Bennett, Ann Legg, Gretchen Holder, Joyce Lande, Karen Hutchings and Rebecca Floyd. If you would like to purchase a RCLPC cookbook they are available for $10.00. Please call the church office or Nancy Blakely. The money will go to the Cookie Walk Fund. Thank you.

Drink a Cup of Brew
and Donate a Dollar or Two

Whether you are enjoying a pastry from the 2nd Sunday Cookie Lift bakers, or spending time between services visiting with new or long-term church friends, a cup of coffee or tea may be just the thing. You’ll notice our donation basket has returned in order to help us keep church expenses trimmed. By all means, share a cup of coffee or tea, whether or not you have coins for the basket. You may also spot a cart for coffee cups. If you’d like to bring a spare cup from home, just label it with your name. Rinse and return it to the cart for your reuse next time. It’s win-win -- we can save money on disposables and produce less waste at the same time.

The ongoing sale of bags of fair trade coffee has had a steady stream of buyers. Be sure to check for your favorite coffee, tea, or chocolate! Purchases support small farmers and their families around the world.

ATTENTION Members and Friends of RCLPC -

Your Church needs your help! The economic conditions have left our church with a budget shortfall from last year and our budgeting process is estimating a budget shortfall for this year. The financial health of our church is serious (but not dire). While we have reserves to carry us in a deficit short term, we cannot risk completely draining our assets.

Please attend a brainstorming session to come up with creative ways to increase income and decrease expenses. The Session will also present to you a proposed solution to turn our situation around, barring an economic crash. You each can play a personal role in this. The brainstorming session will be held during the church's annual meeting on Jan 25th at 10:15am between the 2nd and 3rd service.

Thank you, friends!

Thank you for all your amazing generosity to me during the Advent and Christmas season. It’s such a wonderful privilege to serve in a place filled with great people! I appreciate you and all you do. Thanks! ~Teri

To RCLPC Angels

As I write this open thank you to RCLPC members/friends, my eyes fill with tears of gratitude for your giving spirit. The loving generosity expressed in each gift returned with a tag from our Giving Tree truly made the tree awesome.  Your thoughtfulness will gladden the hearts of recipients you may never meet except where the prayer of the giver and receiver connect in an embrace of Christian love. May you each be richly blessed this Christmastide in measure to the blessings you have so freely given to the lonely and needy. Mission Outreach Ministry

Girl Scout Cookies for the Troops!

It's that wonderful time of the year when Brownies and Girl Scouts take orders for their famous cookies.  Please consider buying a box, taping a brief note to it ("We are thinking of you" or "This is from a Cubs fan in McHenry County"), and bringing it to RCLPC when the cookies are delivered. We will give a box to each of the 54 families of the National Guard soldiers, and we will send boxes to RCLPC's troops and the 56 soldiers in the Woodstock National Guard stationed in Afghanistan. Did you know that our National Guard troops increased from 54 to 56 because our soldiers adopted two soldiers who were not getting any care packages? Questions - please contact Mary Moltmann or Ed Bennett

Hi-Lites from Session

The Session of the Ridgefield-Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church met on Monday evening, Dec. 15 2008. The following actions were taken:

  • The Clerk of Session reported that a small team had gone over the membership rolls of the church. After communication was made with those folks who haven’t worshipped with us for over two years, a decision was made to remove 39 members from the rolls and to move 16 to the inactive rolls.
  • Rick Thompson was examined as a new elder and welcomed to the session.
  • The baptism of Audrey Floyd, daughter of Brian and Rebecca Floyd was approved for January 11, 2009.
  • The baptism of Henry Pracht, son of Jim and Andrea Pracht was approved. The date will be determined.
  • A risk management team for our child Protection policies was approved. Ed Bennett, Cynthia Lopuszynski, and George Steffen will be serving six year terms on this team.
  • A discussion of the budget took place. We are running a deficit and will need to address this. A team was put together to propose a budget for 2009. The Session will vote on the budget on January 10th at the retreat for Session and Deacons.
  • A Congregational meeting was called for January 25, 2009 immediately following the shortened 9:30 worship service. The meeting will be for the purpose of:
  1. Receiving the annual report (including the budget for 2009)
  2. Electing a Pastor Nominating Committee
  3. Approving the terms of call for Rev. Teri Peterson for 2009
  4. Approving the new Mission Statement
Dale Prindiville (Clerk of Session)

Fairhaven School Student Sponsorship

In April of 2008 members and friends of our congregation began providing generous financial support for three students at Fairhaven School, the special school in Alexandria, Egypt, for handicapped children that we have been associated with for several years. Just recently the director of the school informed us that Randa is starting a new program to teach her to communicate through pictures. Safaa and Sara go once a week to a factory for training where they help with the wrapping of ready-made garments.

The Mission Outreach Ministry wishes to continue the student sponsorship relationship with Fairhaven School in 2009 so that Sara, Randa, and Safaa, along with over 200 other young people, can continue to learn and grow with the compassion and support of the Fairhaven School teachers and staff.

We are coming to the congregation to ask that you prayerfully consider helping in sponsoring these children. Monthly tuition costs are $140 per month for the eleven-month school year. One-time donations, as well as monthly or quarterly contributions in whatever amount you can afford, are needed and appreciated. Thank you for helping us reach out in love to Fairhaven School.

Learn more about Fairhaven at www.saraychurch.org. Click on “Community Service” then click on “Mentally Challenged.”

Thanks from a National Guard Family
A number of families have contributed baby, toddler, and children's clothing and car seats to the families of soldiers in the Woodstock National Guard. Following is a thank you from one of the families - "With special thanks for your kindness. Thank you for the car seat and clothes! They were much needed! - Norman, Brigette, Fallon, and Bryn, Delta Company"

Thank you so much for the Christmas Stocking & all the goodies! Nice to have your support, hope you all have a very Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! Stay warm! Attached are a few pictures of the guys opening the package. Thank you, 1SG Andrew Fowles, US Army, FOB Mehtar Lam, Afg.

Hi Mary –
Wow! I don’t know how to say thanks for all the packages. I hope Laurie showed you the picture of me and the birthday monkey in the humvee. The AF office that I run is hosting a Christmas open house and the Christmas decorations you sent will be perfect. I am going to put Snoopy [a 4-ft. airblown Snoopy] at the door to welcome everyone. There are about 50 troops who will either be on their way home or on their way into country and it’s good to have someplace on Christmas where they can get a taste of home. … I hope you have a wonderful holiday and find yourself surrounded by friends and family. Please extend my thanks to everyone who assisted with the packages. They have brought many smiles and joy here. God Bless, Amy

Thank you for thinking of us. The stockings are terrific, we can all share the movies and music. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday! 1st SG Andrew Fowles, D 1/178th IN, FOB Mehtar Lam Afghanistan

Dear Mary -
Thank you and everyone in your Church for the care package. It means a lot to us to hear from home, even when the message or package is from someone we don't personally know. Please accept my brief note as a heartfelt thank you from all the men in my platoon. God bless you and your Church. Don Silva, Camp Wright, Afghanistan

Faith to Faith, Face to Face
An Interfaith Certification Program for Lay People

Beginning on Thursday, January 15, a group of faith communities in our area is offering an introductory class in interfaith relations.  Brochures and registration forms are available electronically and as hard copies from Lisa Solarz at lisa@fcc-cl.org or (815) 459-6010.  The class will meet at the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake (461 Pierson Street) on two Thursday evenings of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The material to be presented is suitable for beginners (including high school students), but will allow more in-depth explorations for those who are interested. Participants will be asked to work on a project of their own design each semester.  Those who successfully complete four semesters will receive a certificate in interfaith studies from FaithBridge, the local interfaith consortium. All presentations will be made by representatives of the traditions being explored.  Presentations will be videotaped for those who must miss a session.

Registration Costs: The registration fee is $145 per person per semester, with a $45 discount for the second and additional members of a household.

Allison Baker, a student at Chicago Theological Seminary, will work with Dr. Gilbert (Budd) Friend-Jones, FCC's Senior Minister, to coordinate the class.  "Alli" received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of Central Florida where she earned a Minor Certificate in Judaic Studies and completed significant coursework in interfaith studies. A professional graphic designer, she has worked for the Journal of Youth Ministries. She has some knowledge of Spanish, Hebrew and German.  Her January term at CTS is devoted  "Interfaith Leadership".  Budd has helped organize the Faith Alliance of Metropolitan Atlanta and the World Pilgrims and has led interfaith groups on pilgrimages to Morocco, Spain and Gibraltar.

Childcare: FCC is arranging childcare for next Thursday (Jan 15) for the Faith to Faith class. Childcare will be offered from 6:45 pm until 9:15 pm each night the class meets when there are children who require it.  This will be a free service, but because we have to recruit and pay the childcare providers, we need a definite count of the number of children who will be here.  We need to know the names and ages of all children who are coming.  If they have special medical needs, health concerns, allergies or dietary requirements, please let us know.  FYI: FCC has a "safe church policy." This means that all childcare workers have successfully passed background checks, and that at least two child-care providers are required to be present at any time a child is present.

The sponsoring faith communities are The Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple, the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, the Islamic Center of McHenry County, the McHenry County Jewish Congregation, and the Mission and Spiritual Care Department of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. This class is inspired by a similar program offered by the London Inter Faith Centre and made possible with the generous financial support of the McHenry County Community Foundation.

Cordially,
Budd Friend-Jones (budd@fcc-cl.org)
Alli Baker (abaker@ctschicago.edu)
Lisa Solarz (lisa@fcc-cl.org)

Hands Along the Nile Development Services (HANDS)

Join HANDS’ 2009 Medical Mission Trip to Egypt! Hands Along the Nile Development Services (HANDS) is inviting medical professionals to take part in our upcoming “Medical Mission to Egypt" in April 2009. This is an exchange program started three years ago that brings together American medical professionals and their colleagues in underserved Egyptian communities. If you are a medical professional, we hope you will consider joining our upcoming trip, scheduled for early April 2009. Also, please forward this letter to people who might be interested in joining this trip.

About HANDS: As you may know, HANDS is an American non-profit organization with charitable, 501 (c) 3 status. Established twenty years ago, HANDS aims to promote peace and cooperation with the Middle East, through building bridges between the US and Egypt, the most populous and one of the most influential countries in the Arab world. HANDS creates partnerships between Americans and Egyptians to increase intercultural understanding between our nations and to support community development in poor communities in Egypt. HANDS partners with 30 Egyptian civil society organizations. Together, we touch the lives of an estimated 100,000 people in need each year.

Medical Mission program: We started the Medical Mission in response to the numerous requests for professional training voiced by health care professionals working in clinics in underserved areas of Egypt. With this in mind, we will organize our third professional exchange and training program for health care professionals in early April 2009. During this time the US medical professionals will have the opportunity to hold demonstrative treatment campaigns in underprivileged communities and present workshops on their specialties for their Egyptian colleagues. Of course, we hope that this trip will be only the start of a long-term and fruitful personal and professional cooperation between counterparts from the two countries.

Specific needs: Egyptian physicians identified their own training needs as the following: ophthalmology, cardiology, hepatology, gastroenterology, pulminology, nephrology, and internal medicine. There is also a great need for nurses with training experience, as the lack of training for nurses is one of the biggest problems affecting the quality of health care in Egypt. Most participants in this round of the program will be from the community based clinics that HANDS supports in Egypt and from public clinics in Cairo and Minia. These clinics regularly participate in our partners' health care improvement campaigns targeting poor and disadvantaged populations in Cairo and Minia governorates.

Local partner: The Medical Mission program is organized and implemented in cooperation with our Egyptian partner organization, CEOSS. CEOSS is one of Egypt's leading development organizations and has worked in community health care for over 50 years. As a result, CEOSS has very strong working relationships with the Egyptian Ministry of Health, and deeply rooted relationships with over 150 poor communities in Egypt.

Additional information about the trip: The cost of the program is $2,000 excluding airfare. This covers the cost of hotel accommodation, food and beverages (except alcohol), local transportation, and weekend sightseeing tours in Egypt (tour guides, entrance fees, transportation etc). While we are happy to help volunteers find the best airline deal, we also encourage you to take advantage of mileage programs or other airline benefits you may have access to. To show our gratitude for your donation of time and knowledge, HANDS can offer a receipt confirming your tax deductible contribution in the amount of the cost of entire trip, which can be claimed on end-of-year tax forms.

Dates: The program is scheduled for Sunday, March 29 to Thursday, April 9. We encourage you to join us to help improve the quality of health care in destitute Egyptian communities. For details about the trip, please contact our office at (703) 875-9370 or write to us by email at medmission@handsalongthenile.org. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
