Thanks to Jody LeFevre, Paula Ekstrom, and Dorothy Vick for bringing fruit trays; to M.J. Towne, Cindy Russo, Joan Black, and Sally Weller for bringing breads; to Lou Rabe and Ed Bennett for helping with logistics; and to Emily Floyd and the Sounds of Joy Choir for providing music. - Kathy Rabe and Mary Moltmann
The Cookie Lift Project at RCLPC will enter its 2nd float in the Woodstock Memorial Day Parade. We will need to line up at 10 AM on Monday, May 26. Walt and Linda Rosquist again have generously offered to let us use their bright red truck for the "float." If you plan to join us, please 1) buy a big bag of candy or dog bones, 2) contact me so that I can inform you of the NEW RULES that the Parade Committee has established for public safety and let you know where to meet. Members and friends of all ages and friendly dogs on leashes are encouraged to participate. We had a lot of fun last year, and many people lining the parade route commented that we were the only float that passed out treats for the dogs! - Mary Moltmann and Ed Bennett
Summer brings warm weather, RCLPC picnics, baseball games, backyard BBQs, and vacations! Take time this summer to bring a little sunshine into the life of a patient and their loved ones. Nationwide, blood centers often face blood shortages during June, July, and August when donors are busy with summer schedules and high school and college students are on summer break. But, the need for blood never takes a vacation. With your generosity, you can give someone a second chance at life - filled with many more vacations and summer time fun!
Please stop by to donate blood on Sunday, June 22nd from 9am to 1pm. The drive will be held on Heartland’s Mobile Coach. Please call Ken Zoerner to schedule your appointment today. Of course, walk-ins will be accepted. On behalf of the patients that are served, THANK YOU!
We had a great year at WEAVE! Our Wednesday Evening AVEnues took us on explorations of local restaurants, led us on journeys of learning about other faiths and our own, and gave us opportunities for fellowship. It was a great year! We look forward to coming back in the fall with dinner, choir, and adult education opportunities!
Many thanks to the Fellowship Team who organized dinners this year—especially to Linda Peel who ordered, to Cindy Borre, Doug Begley, and Cecily Weber who headed up the set-up/clean-up efforts, and to Kim Stewart who kept us all in line. And lots of thanks to the many of you who pitched in to help whenever you were around—we couldn’t have done it without you! If you’d like to help in the future, let us know!
Wondering what scripture will be used in upcoming worship services and what we’re pondering about our worship life? Wondering what your pastors are thinking about these days? Wondering what we’re reading? Check out our new blog! You can link to it from our RCLPC website or you can just type in rclpc.wordpress.com. You can read and, if you want, you can comment and join in the conversation! There are instructions on the blog, so jump right in!
Help needed
As gas prices continue to rise, so too does the number of people needing assistance with gas money so they can get to work. If you are willing to help, please buy a gas card (or two!) and drop it off at the church office or place the card in your offering envelope so you will receive tax credit for the donation. Thank you for your generosity in helping those less fortunate!
The Bread Basket Ministry needs your help this summer! As you may know, when visitors worship with us and provide a local delivery address, we acknowledge their visit with a note and a tasty baked treat during the week following worship! There is a new summer sign-up sheet in The Connecting Link. Please consider signing up for one or two weeks during the summer to continue this welcoming tradition! And please include your email address! Any questions, call Amy Collins. Thanks!
You can pick up perennials and fresh produce as it becomes available on
Sunday mornings at the Share the Bounty table in the Connecting Link. Help yourself to our bounty, then place a donation in the basket to support those in need in the community. This season’s donations will be used to provide lunches for PADS clients next winter. If you’re a gardener, please bring whatever extra plants and garden produce you have. We need volunteers to clean up the table at noon each Sunday, May through October. Add your name to the list on the table if you can help. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry
This summer Richard and Teri will offer a class called “The Bible in 90 Days.” No experience or prior knowledge is necessary to join this class—it’s great for teens through adults, newcomers and those who’ve read the Bible before—all are welcome!
We will read the entire Bible over the summer—it only comes to about 12-15 pages a day, depending on the size of your Bible—and talk about it and learn about it as a group. The idea is to find out what the Bible actually says without getting bogged down in the difficult parts, and to encourage each other as a community throughout the reading experience. You get a calendar and each day you read the assignment. (You can use your own Bible, borrow one from the church, or go to biblein90days.org to order a special Bible laid out just for this class.) Then once a week we come together to talk about what we’ve read and to learn more about the historical context and the various interpretations that have affected our faith tradition. If you go on vacation or need to miss a class, no problem! Just keep reading and re-join the class when you return. We will also post reflections about the daily readings on the church blog, where you can join in a conversation each day for more encouragement! Watch for more information and a sign-up in the Connecting Link—the class will begin the 1st week of June!
“His Many Lightnings” Eastman
From Boston, Massachusetts news article: Seventy-six year old resident of Flandreau, SD, Emmett Eastman was one of ten of thousands who took part in the Boston Marathon in April finishing the 26-mile race in just over six hours. Yes that was not a misprint – he is 76 years old!!
He is also one of 250 people partaking in the Longest Walk II, a cross country trek from San Francisco, California to Washington, D.C. dedicated to bring attention at a national level to issues regarding Native American sites, and the environment. This trek began in February and will finish on July 11. Hurry, you can catch up!!!
While he was in Boston, he accepted an award on behalf of his great-uncle, Dr. Charles Eastman at Boston University and met the Mayor Tom Menino as well as four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers, Boston Red Sox outfielder and fellow Native American Jacoby Ellsbury. It was Eastman’s second run in Boston. In 1972, he showed up ready for the run but was denied entry for application reasons with the Marathon Officials threatening to have him arrested if he didn’t meet their requirements. They later allowed him to enter the race as a gesture of goodwill after undergoing media pressure and he finished that marathon in three hours and 40 minutes. Well, he was only 40, then. For more information see www.longestwalk.com.
