Building & Grounds Corner
Key Fobs – Last Call

I heard that we changed to those new fangled key fob things
for the church doors but my old key still works just fine so why bother?

Not any more it doesn’t. The outside locks have all been re-keyed and your old church keys will no longer work on any outside entry doors. If you need access after hours please ask Kim, our church secretary, for your very own key fob. If you already have a fob or card for your system at work and it says “Keri” on it, just tell Kim the number and you will be able to use it at church as well.

MISSION FUNDS DISTRIBUTED
A small group of dedicated RCLPC members gathered to distribute funds in the church Designated Mission account, in the amount of $6,600.00, to designated local and global missions. Following discussion, the consensus was to send $600.00 to each of the following agencies immediately:

Family Health Partnership Clinic
White Buffalo Calf Woman’s Shelter
Hands Along the Nile
Fairhaven School
Crystal Lake Food Pantry
Build a Dream
PADS
Home of the Sparrow
Illinois Migrant Council

Information is being gathered on the status of The Good Samaritan Ministry in Crystal Lake and two domestic violence agencies in McHenry County.

For further information about the above agencies, please feel free to contact your Mission Deacons, Rick Johnson, Ann Legg, Joy Martin.

PEACEMAKING OFFERING
Twenty-five percent of our congregation’s giving to the Peacemaking Offering this year will go to Samuel Rizk, Gendi’s son and a graduate student from our partnering church in Egypt. Sam, his wife and child had been living in Lebanon where he was working in urban and rural development and Christian-Muslim dialogue. Fortunately, they were able to escape Lebanon and are now in the United States where Sam is working on a PhD in conflict resolution studies at George Mason University in Virginia. Some may remember Sam from the summers he spent with us while attending Hanover College.

CROP Walk
Please see the footsteps around RCLPC, and how can you miss that sign in the Connecting Link! The 2006 Crop Walk will be on Sunday, October 15th. Last year RCLPC, with the outstanding support from the Middle School, Senior High and Boy Scouts, collected $2690. The proposed amount for 2006 is $3000. The local food pantry will receive 20% of money collected and 5% will go to our local soup kitchen. Please do sponsor one of the Walkers as they raise funds to help those who hunger around the world. These walkers will be very visible during these next weeks and need your sponsorship.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE
The “Shop and Share” at Jewel last month brought the food pantry $512. So, it really can make a difference. Thank you all. ~ Nancy Vazzano

MISSION OPPORTUNITIIES
Unfortunately, not all mission requests for funding could be approved. We are hoping that some of these worthy needs can be supplied through individual giving. Please feel free to contact Joy Martin, Ann Legg or Rick Johnson, for further information about the agencies and the need.

JOY COMMUNITY CHURCH
(Finishing the Last State of Their Long Awaited Church Building at
108 S. Lakewood Rd., LITH, IL.)

Rev. Paul Stunkel requests funds toward the creation and erection of a sign that will cost $2,000.00. Unfortunately, their budget does not allow for this purchase and they now find that a large, lighted church sign is definitely a necessity. Volunteer Opportunity: Due to local building codes, they must have a good portion of the landscaping completed this fall instead of in the spring. People power is the need! Helping hands to enable them to accomplish the absolutely essential work needed such as planting bushes and trees, spreading grass seed, etc. These are one time needs for the church that grew out of RCLPC.

FAITH IN ACTION OF McHENRY COUNTY
(111 Virginia St., Crystal Lake, IL. 60014)

Rhonda Anderson, Executive Director, 815-455-3813, has indicated that many of their Care Receivers (62+) are living on fixed income and find it almost impossible to pay for transportation. In order to assist seniors with an immediate, same day transportation need to the doctor or other critical appointment, FIAMC would like to establish a taxicab voucher system. In this way, such requests that they don’t have a Care Giver available to fill on such short notice, can be handled through the Faith in Action voucher program.

A New Egyptian Connection
In honor of our most recent trip to our sister congregation in Alexandria, Egypt we are seeking to form new and lasting connections with Fairhaven School. We are hoping to come up with a one year scholarship for a 16 year old mentally disabled student, named Sara Samir. Sara's father is currently unemployed and therefore unable to afford her tuition. Tuition is $100 per month. We are looking for people to keep Sara in their prayers in addition to financial contributions to her tuition fund. If you are interested in contributing in any amount, Steve and Laura Middaugh are collecting the donations. They can be left in Steve's mailbox just outside the church office.

Letter from Andy

HI Mary, and all at the Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church.

I want to thank you for the care package you sent me. It's so nice of you to think of us out here. Your support has been a great boost to morale out here, having support from family and friends is expected, but your generosity and prayers is over the top, thanks so much. The ice pops were a great idea, nice to come back after work and grab one. My unit is finishing up our work here and will be back state side in about two weeks, we are all looking forward to getting back with our families and friends. I am looking forward to cool air. The highs for the day out here are still around 110 with the lows around 80. It's amazing that your body can get used to it but it does to an extent anyway.

Thank you again.
Andy Hushek

NATIVE AMERICAN CONNECTION

Crazy Horse Monument

Out of Crazy Horse, South Dakota comes the latest news about the monument started by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in 1948 and still being worked on today. The Dakota/Lakota Journal indicates that there will be the first national fund drive this fall with the intent of heeding the late sculptor’s parting words, “go slowly so you do it right.”

His dream was to honor American Indians by carving the 563-foot-high likeness of the Sioux warrior into a granite mountain. The massive lifelike face was dedicated in 1998, the 50th anniversary of the first blast and is now complete. Visitor numbers have grown to more than 1 million annually and the complex of buildings at the carving’s base now includes a museum, education center and restaurant. The goal of the national fund drive is to work toward completion and to expand cultural and educational programs at the memorial.

Jim Hagen, a former South Dakota tourism director who is leading the drive, said people around the country and the world are interested in the memorial and its mission. “It makes it very fun and very easy when I’m approaching people about the project because so many people know about it. And there seems to be a deeper interest in a memorial that honors the Native American, maybe in some ways, righting the wrongs,” he says. Have you seen it, what do you think???
