Pumpkin Update

We are very sorry, but there will be NO pumpkins for RCLPC this year. As you all have probably read in the newspaper (or heard about it), pumpkins are in short supply because of the wet, cool summer. Hopefully, next year will be better! If we have extra gourds and squash, they will be put out for Share the Bounty. Cindee Robinson

PADS Lunches

The October thru April lunch program will soon begin. A sign up sheet is in the Connecting Link for the first months of October and November. We will be preparing 35 to 50+ lunches on the 2nd and 5th Sunday of each month, plus the 4th Friday. If you are available, please do consider this mission. Just making a lunch with love, for a homeless person, is a wonderful reward.

Help Needed

We are in need of $20/$25 Jewel gift cards which can be used for gas and/or food. People are hurting and our need to assist people who come in during the week is growing. If you feel you could purchase a gift card or two, please place them in an envelope with your name marked on it in the offering plate. These cards will be turned into the church office where we can allocate them as needed and you will receive a letter confirming your donation. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank You

We would like to thank the 26 RCLPC regular volunteers for their dedication and loyal service to McHenry's Seniors 60+ in age as well as kudos to the many other RCLPC supporters of Faith in Action of McHenry County through the Christmas Giving Tree and annual Pasta Dinner in January each year. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Letter from Our Troops

"All is well here … I'll be here through Christmas short of something happening to shorten our tour. We're looking at sometime in January before we head back to the states. Thanks again for all that ya'll are doing for us here. Really appreciate it!" - MSG Bill Soby (cousin of Tina Stipati) at Forward Operating Base Falcon, Iraq

Native American Pow Wow - Saturday, November 7, 2009

The Native American Connection is planning to attend a Pow Wow at the U of I Chicago Pavilion at 1150 West Harrison Street and wonder if you would like to join us. Indicate your interest on the sign up sheet on the Mission Bulletin Board in the Connecting Link.

Cookie Walk Volunteers Needed

Our Cookie Walk is Saturday December 12th and we need to start planning but first we need a few good volunteers! The Cookie Walk has 5 committees with two co-chairs for each committee. We are delighted to have some of our co-chairs from last year but do however need four more to fill those open spots. Please check out the sign-up sheet in the Connecting Link and be a part of this awesome group and important Mission for our church. If you have any questions please call or e-mail Nancy Blakely. Thank you!

Peacemaking Offering

World Mission Challenge

October 4 is World Communion
and Peacemaking Sunday.

What an appropriate day to participate in the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s World Mission Challenge!

Forty mission workers will be traveling throughout the country to tell how God is at work around the world. We will have an opportunity to hear the Rev. Doug Orbaker who has been serving in Nicaragua since 2004 as Delegations coordinator for the Council of Evangelical Churches (CEPAD).

Come to Fellowship Hall
Sunday Evening October 4
6:30 to 8:30 PM

We will have dessert first and then hear more of Rev. Orbaker’s experiences.
Please sign up in the Connecting Link.

Won’t you become a part of building peace in our world?

On October 4 we celebrate World Communion Sunday and receive the Peacemaking Offering. On this day we join with Christians around the world to celebrate the unity that we find at the Table of the Lord. We also receive the Peacemaking Offering as we seek to live out Christ’s command to work for justice and peace in the world. Our congregation will use 25% of the Offering for RCLPC’s peacemaking ministry to feed the hungry through the PADS lunch program. The other 75% will help our partners in the presbytery, synod, and General Assembly as they work on behalf of God’s peacemaking throughout the world.

Attention all men!!

Do you want to get more out of your camera?
How creative are you with that little black box?

The next Men's Breakfast will open up to all some creative ways to make the camera and our photos come alive. Chuck Rasmussen has agreed to share his passion for this subject, make it exciting for us that long to take great pictures. His expertise on this subject will likely turn us all on to this fascinating hobby. Join us - you won't be sorry. The meal, fellowship and program will be a great beginning to your day. It all happens at the Colonial Café in Crystal Lake on Saturday, Oct. 3rd at 8:00 a.m. See you there!!

Share the Bounty

Where did the summer go??? If you have tons of green tomatoes, never fear; Fried Green Tomatoes are here! Try this southern delicacy today; pick up your free recipe at the “Share the Bounty” table. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the variety of locally grown veggies which have been generously donated: corn, bell peppers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini and green beans to name a few. Goodness, we have some talented gardeners in our church! Again, your donations to this worthwhile mission are greatly appreciated and will be used to provide meals for the local PADs program. Thank you! ~Mission Outreach

The remainder goes to Church World Service where funds are used to help children and families around the world. PLEASE TAKE AN ENVELOPE: raise funds, contribute, walk. Make a difference. Please see MJ Towne for a fund raising envelope. You can also donate on the web at www.cropwalkonline.org for Team RCLPC.

Children at RCLPC

Children are an important part of our church family, and we strive to include them as participants in our community life. Whenever there is a baptism, we as a congregation make promises. The question we are asked is:

Do you, as members of the church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture this child and his parents, by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging them to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of his church?

As part of this commitment to share Christ’s love with our children, you are encouraged to look over these 6 “privileges of the child” and find ways to incorporate our children and their parents more fully into our life together.

Each child has the privilege:
  • To be in the midst of the congregation, not on the sidelines.
  • To wander among us during worship, being the responsibility of each of us.
  • To give answers during children's time without being laughed at.
  • To be called by name by each adult.
  • To be a valued person in the congregation.
  • To be led to faith by the Christ-like love, care, and model of each adult.
  • To be an active participant in worship.

20th Anniversary! Fairhaven School, Alexandria, Egypt

Pastor Gendi Rizk is in the process of inviting those who have been instrumental in the growth of Fairhaven School for special needs children to their 20th Anniversary celebration on Easter Sunday 2010.

RCLPC has a 30+ year relationship with Pastor Gendi and has been a loyal supporter of Fairhaven. We have visited the school on each of our three trips to Egypt. We have hosted teachers from the school as they honed their skills at local non-profit agencies for the challenged, like NISRA and Pioneer Center. We are presently providing scholarships for three of the students so they can continue to attend life-giving classes there. (Please take a few moments and look at the pictures on the Mission Bulletin Board in the Connecting Link.)

If you are interested in a trip to Egypt next year, please let one of the Mission Deacons know in the next few weeks (Ann Legg, Rebecca Floyd, Cheryl Brincks, Rick Johnson, Joy Martin).

Tortillas and Trade Delegation to Mexico

Chicago Religious Leadership Network is planning to send a delegation to Mexico during the depths of Chicago’s winter - January 2010. They will look at the role of people of faith in contemporary issues affecting Mexico, such as trade, food insecurity, hunger, and globalization. Their partners in Mexico include the Lutheran Center in Mexico City and the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development. To learn more about the delegation, go to http://www.crln.org/Mexico_Tortillas_Trade/2010. To request a delegation application, contact Erica Spilde at espilde@crln.org. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Rick or Lois Johnson. We found this trip last January to be thought-provoking, mind-opening, and life-changing. An additional bonus—the temps in Cuernavaca were in the low 80s!
